Yes, class, today is a day of great importance. Does anybody know why?
Yes, you in the back?
Did you say that today was the 215th anniversary of the beheading of King Louis XVI?
That is absolutely correct!
It was on January 15th 1793 that the French National Convention convicted the ex-monarch of, well, being a monarch and voted 361 to 288 to put him to death. On January 21st (today) the last king of France was named citizen Louis Capet, was led to the gullitine and beheaded. This sparked many wars with other nations and eventually brought about the rise of a Monsieur Bonaparte. This also, rather emphatically, signaled the end of absolute monarchy in France and the complete control of the 'French Republic'.
Let's try to keep the confetti to a minimum.

Hey, they're not MY relatives......
That was a good day - that impostor was a detriment to the welfare of France!
Actually Stephen,
That was a horrible day for France, even from a non-biased point of view.
The neighboring countries, when they heard of the execution where outraged, and five kings declared war on France. Execution was not the only option of the French: banishment or imprisonment would have been very acceptable solutions as well, and the vote was actually very close.
Because of the bloodthirstiness of the revolutionists, thousands of lives were lost in petty wars, which lead to the appointment of Neapolitan Bonaparte with the eventual end of having half of the men in Europe being slain!
That qualifies this event as being a very bad day in my book.
Your serve.
