From the folks that brought you the ban on home-schooling...

Yep, that's right. The (Republican dominated) California Supreme Court has made another momentous decision this week by ruling that the standing law in California banning same-sex marriages "makes no sense". The ruling is supposed to come into effect in about three weeks.

Right now two things are going on to counter it. Firstly, many organization have petitioned the court to delay the ruling until after the fall elections. Also, there is an initiative making the rounds that, providing it gets enough signatures, will put an amendment to the California Constitution on the ballot banning gay marriage. Although Governor Schwarzenegger has vetoed two bills in the past that would have allowed gay marriage, he is content with the decision and "will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling." There is still hope, though, the last bill that went to the people of California restricting gay marrege passed by 60%, so we're not dead in the water, yet.

I see a lot of cons coming out of this, and maybe some pros: Firstly, the fact that the thirty million people living in California (app. 1/10 the US population) can now marry their partners is a definite con but will definitely bring this to the national level. If we're in luck, John McCain just might make this an issue to adopt into his campaign especially with a strong traditional marriage running mate. Personally, however, I don't think it is likely. Considering how liberal Barrack Obama really is, my guess is that McCain will spend most of his campaign doing what he does best: Reaching across the isle and trying to pick up as many moderate Democratic votes, that are scared by Sen. Obama, as he can. Translation: Lots of global warming and world peace, not a lot on gun rights, abortion, or gay marriage.

Anyhow, with the way things are going, this is going to become the next Roe v. Wade and your kids are going to be asking you about the days that homosexuals
weren't able to get married.
